In similar vein, Sierra’s admirable characterization of the juxtaposition of nightmare and dawn from Bellini’s La Sonnambula (1831), Ah! non credea mirarti … Ah non giunge, was clad in nuanced musical psychology by the soprano and the orchestra. While his account of the life of a poet unfolded, Kim and the orchestra provided the tenor with touchingly subtle instrumental accompaniment, enabling Pati to explore the colorist finesse of his vocal art in full measure. Moving on to one of the staples of the tenor repertoire bravura, Che gelida manina from Puccini’s ever-gorgeous La Bohème (1893-95) was heard in Pati’s utterly charming reading. A meditation on the duality between the performer and the role emotions projected and concealed within, Si può provided the audience with a refined opener. To give the evening an aptly self-reflective prologue, Si può from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (1892) was given in contemplative performance by Meachem and the orchestra under Kim. In this respect, San Francisco Opera’s 100th season launch Opera Ball: The Centennial Celebration on Friday evening came out quite joyfully.Ĭonducted by Music Director Eun Sun Kim, the San Francisco Opera Orchestra was joined by a quartet of the Company’s marvellous soloists, soprano Nadine Sierra, tenors Michael Fabiano and Pene Pati as well as baritione Lucas Meachem for a set-list of musical highlights from Puccini to Freddie Mercury, alongside a world premiere commission from the Korean-American composer Texu Kim.īefittingly for an opera house firmly rooted in the Italian tradition, good doses of Puccini and Bellini was heard on the first half, bookended by some fine takes on Leoncavallo and Verdi. Coming up with mix and match programmes of thoughtful artistic integrity and full entertainment value, while maintaining appealing musical continuity and context, is not an easy business. Opening night galas constitute an art form of their own right.
